Sonada is a village fast developing into a town. It is in the district of Darjeeling lying between Kurseong and Darjeeling. Majority of the population depend on the tea gardens for their livelihood. Besides Gurkhas, there are also other tribal groups like Sherpas, Tamangs, And limboos. The people are generally very simple and peace loving.
The community at Sonada was founded in 1968. The main purpose at that time was to make medical facilities available for the local people, since there were no hospitals nearby. To support the young girls of the locality, a Home Science school was set up in the initial years. Later on it had to be closed down owing to the decline in the numbers. Due to lack of patients the dispensary also had to be closed down in 2006.
At present the community is engaged in the mission of education. In the year 1972 a school was constructed for the girls of the locality. Later on a primary school was established as a feeder school to the existing high school. In the year 1979 the school from classes 5 to 10 got affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and came under Grant in Aid. In the year, 2011 the school was upgraded as Higher Secondary.

Sonada Holy Cross Girls’ Higher Secondary School is one of best schools in the Darjeeling district.

The school also has a government recognized hostel for girls.
At present there are five sisters in the community.
