Binnaguri is a village situated in the Tea estate, in the district of Jalpaiguri of the State of West Bengal. People from different States like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Bihar are working in the tea estate. They are of different religion and castes, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Most of the people belong to different tribal groups working in the tea gardens with a minimum daily wages. Many families are economically poor and cannot afford to educate their children in private English- medium schools that charge high fees.
Keeping this in the back of the mind, Holy Cross sisters landed in Binnaguri in the year 1975 and established a Hindi medium primary school for the tea garden children. In the year 2012 the school was upgraded to class 8. At present the school which started with few students in shade of trees 50 years ago has a beautiful school building which educate more than 2000 children from classes nursery to eight.
In spite of the hurdles of insufficient fund, lack of cooperation from the guardians, the menace of wild elephants, negative influence of the media and alcoholism in the families, the sisters and teachers continue to forge ahead with courage and dedication, in their pursuit of excellence.
At present 05 sisters are engaged in this noble mission of educating the underprivileged children.
